There is much discussion and concern regarding the use of cookies.

When a website wants to "set" a cookie, it asks your browser software for permission to store a small bit of text on your computer's hard drive. Microsoft's Internet Explorer keeps each cookie in its own file, while Netscape's Navigator keeps all cookies within a single file.

Whatever browser you are using, the cookie is only text and occupies just a few bytes on your hard drive. It is never an executable program and can't be "read" except by the website that stored it. It can, however, be an extra convenience to you by allowing you to take advantage of special features on a site. On this site, they allow you to browse freely, without having to login several times to view different sections of the site. They don't tell us your email address, what other sites you visit, or anything else personal.
